"Blue Willow" Stoneware and Porcelain Tableware
Item Details
A selection of tableware including a teapot, a covered sugar bowl, two coffee cups, and one teacup. The pieces feature the Blue Willow pattern depicting a pagoda on a hillside near a waterfront and songbirds flying among willow trees with diamond patterns to the borders. The famous Willow pattern has imagery derived from Chinese export porcelain that was first produced by Josiah Spode in 1790. The pattern became extremely popular and has been produced continuously ever since. The stoneware coffee cups are marked ‘USA’ to the underside while the porcelain creamer and teacup are marked Japan. The antique teapot lacks a maker’s mark placing production before 1891.
