Antique 1889 Oil Painting of a Woman's Portrait

An antique oil painting, painted in 1889. This realistically-rendered piece depicts a woman in profile with her hair pinned up, wearing a high-collared shirt with a red brooch and dark jacket. She sits against a dark background, and is painted with a delicate brush and careful attention to detail. The work is signed illegibly to the lower right and dated 1889, and has backing paper to the verso from a German newspaper published in 1890. It is presented in an ornate gold tone wood and gesso frame that has molded ivy and palmette ornamentation, with a triangle hook to the verso for hanging.
Condition
- chip to painting with missing paint in lower left; discoloration to varnish; accretion on painting; backing paper remnants on verso of frame; punctures in backing paper; pieces broken and chipped off of frame decoration; discoloration on verso of canvas.
