Fred Schmidt Painted Steel Sculpture
Item Details
Metal
A painted steel sculpture by listed artist Fred Schmidt (1936 – 2001). This work is composed of welding steel, painted in brown and taupe. Displayed on a square base, a V-shaped support holds a right angle. The piece is topped with a thick curled form, which features two thin strips of metal jutting out in delicate tension. The abstract work is signed to the base.
Native of Cleveland, Ohio, Fred Schmidt worked as a welder for the railroad and became inspired by the ease with which he transformed metal fragments into abstract forms. His sculptures have been on display throughout the Midwest, including the Cleveland Museum of Art and the Canton Museum of Art. The pedestal on which the art piece is displayed is included with the item.
