A limited edition woodblock print on paper titled Hair Decoration (髪かざり), created in 1969 by Japanese artist and printmaker Shuzo Ikeda (池田修三, 1922 – 2004), known for his 1960s portraits of large-eyed subjects, often posed with flowers or animals. The stylized print depicts a girl in a white dress, smiling as she places orange flowers in the hair of a boy who sits in front of her. The work is rendered in contrasting hues of blue, orange, white and pale yellow. It is signed ‘Shu Ikeda’ in plate to the lower left, with graphite notations in Japanese below; it is additionally dated and numbered to the lower right as 3 out of an edition of 100. The piece is presented under glass and layered matting in a wooden frame fitted with hanging wire to the verso; the frame backing includes an inscribed note of ‘purchased at the Red Lantern Shop, Kyoto, Japan, Stewarts Gallery Collection’.

Condition

- to fair; foxing and discoloration to print, especially to margins; wear to frame with slightly loose joints, chipping, nicks and scratches; tears to frame’s backing paper.
