Antique Crate from Photography G. Cramer Dry Plate Co.

Item Details

An antique G. Cramer Dry Plate Co. crate. Dry plate was an improved photographic process, also known as the gelatin process, which gained in popularity in the late 19th century. George Eastman of Eastman Kodak, developed a machine to coat plates with the gelatin process in 1879. Gustav Cramer (1838-1914) was a German immigrant who settled in St. Louis and opened a photography business which began to focus mainly on the manufacture of dry plates around the same time as Eastman developed his machine. The crate features a natural pine construction with nailed joinery and black lettering to the front and sides. The crate is marked 14×17 which may refer to the size of the dry plate that it originally stored. Please see the link below for more information on Gustav Cramer.
