Vintage Hand-Knotted Turkish Melez Wool Prayer Rug
Item Details
A hand-knotted Turkish Melez wool prayer rug. The rug has been worked in shades of ivory, sand, charcoal, cinnamon, camel, and persimmon. The design features a mihrab niche with a peaked arch below a panel infilled with tree of life motifs. Hooked details edge the central panel populated by herati framed with florets. The immediately surrounding areas feature reciprocating arches with repeating motifs which in turn are framed by barber pole stripes. Another series of reciprocating arches in different color combinations is bordered by vining, striped, and flower and meander bands. The selvedges are overcast and there is unstabilized fringe at the ends. One end retains part of a short plain woven kilim skirt. Unmarked.
