Antique Victorian Six-Drawer Butler's Chest, Circa Late 19th Century
Item Details
An antique Victorian six-drawer butler’s chest, circa late 19th century. The paneled, mahogany case features a rectangular top with a pierced and scrolled, three-quarter gallery above a stack of six machine-dovetailed, long drawers, one of which is a fall-front, secretaire example. The secretaire drawer has a green, baize-lined writing surface as well as spindled, lateral galleries before a series of pigeonholes and shelves. The drawer fronts are embellished with bookmatched, burl veneers and they are fitted with brass-tone pulls and escutcheons. The chest rises on grooved, stile legs in the front centered by a shaped, foliate-carved skirt. The interior of the top drawer is stamped ‘Patent Applied For / Drawer Guide’ while the back of the case is marked ‘1230’. Additionally, there are partially-illegible inscriptions on the back of the case, on the underside of one drawer, and on the interior, right side panel.
