Signed Polia Pillin Art Pottery Vase

Item Details

A signed art pottery vase by renowned ceramicist Polia Pillin. The hand thrown bud vase features a hand-painted stylized depiction of a female figure holding a small bird in her hand to one side, and a rooster to the other. It is rendered in blue and green glazes with orange and red accents on a striped ground. The vase is signed ‘Pillin’ to the underside.

Pillin (Polish, 1909 – 1992) and her husband William lived in New Mexico and Chicago for many years until relocating to Los Angeles in 1946. They created a new type of glazing which involved mixing engobes and glazes together to develop more lustrous and deep glazes. Their work was largely produced in a home studio. Pillin is listed in Who’s Who of American Art and she won many awards and accolades during her long career. Her work is on display in a number of prestigious public and private collections.
