An untitled abstract watercolor and tempera on paper by listed Cincinnati artist Paul Chidlaw (1900-1989). This painting is rendered with hues of red and blue and loose, lively brushwork, detailed here and there with squiggly white lines. It is matted inside of a sealed acetate cover and includes a label noting the medium, title, and artist’s name.
Paul Chidlaw was born in Cleves, Ohio and studied at both the Cincinnati Art Academy and L’Ecole des Beaux Arts in Fontainebleau, France. He returned to Cincinnati where he then taught at the Art Academy mentoring many students. He was considered a pioneer of the Abstract movement, at the time, and he remains one of Cincinnati’s best-loved native artists. His artwork is displayed in the Cincinnati Art Museum and Xavier University.
