Item Details

Signed

A 1963 limited edition lithograph by artist Zev Daniel Harris. This Expressionist style print depicts a surrealist elephant featuring multiple feet, waving trunk and horns careening its neck backwards, as it supports a cluster of caged windows with people peering from the interior. The goliath creature walks along a checkered ground and is rendered with frenetic, thin linework reinforced with yellow and ochre tones. To the lower right corner is a dated in-plate signature. This is accompanied to the margins with a handwritten signature, icon of a crescent moon, embossed stamp and print edition, listed 21 of 50.

Zev Daniel Harris was born in Italy and studied in Hungary and New York City. He is well-known for his fantastical and surrealist paintings, sculptures, and prints, and his fantasy structure in Big Sur, California titled Crazy Crescent. Harris’ work has been shown in many prominent exhibitions and collections including the Abstract and Surrealist Art in America exhibition at the San Francisco Museum of Art in 1944, the Smithsonian Institute of Art, the Chicago Art Institute, the Whitney Museum of Art, and more.
