John Ross Key Charcoal Drawing on Paper

A signed charcoal drawing on paper of a river’s edge by well-listed American landscape artist John Ross Key (Maryland/Washington, D.C.; 1837 – 1920), grandson of Francis Scott Key, author of The Star Spangled Banner. This drawing, originally titled Moonrise, depicts the edge of a large river surrounded by tall trees, all under a dark, cloudy sky. Artist signature is signed by hand to the lower left. Mounted under a double layer of off-white matting, the drawing is presented under glass in a gold tone wood frame. A wire for hanging purposes and a framer’s decal are present to the verso. Per consignor, this piece originates from a mid-century exhibition of the artist’s works at the Jocelyn Art Museum in Omaha, Nebraska, hosted by members of Key’s immediate family members.
Key’s works are represented in the collections of many reputed museums across the country, including the White House Historical Association; Fine Art Museums of San Francisco; University of Michigan Art Museum; Missouri History Museum; Morris Museum of Art; and Greenville County Museum of Art.

- some dirt/chalk residue around the matte area; nicks and scratches to the frame.
