An 1890 antique ink and watercolor painting by British artist Walter E. Spindler (1878–1940). This painting depicts a costume design for French actress Sarah Bernhardt (1844–1923) in the role of Théodora in the play Théodora. The painting depicts a front view of Berhnhardt holding a large flower and wearing a long gold tone gown and headdress with intricate details and depictions of angels around the skirt. The painting is signed and dated by hand in ink to the lower right corner. The painting is housed in a gold tone wooden frame with intricate floral detail under glass.
Condition
- slight scuffs and wear to frame; discoloration to paint; the sepia-toned ink has a waxy sheen to it, and has a glaze-like appearance with crackle where it is dark and thick on the page.
