Digital Print After August Sander "Young Farmers"

Item Details

A digital print of the photograph by well-listed German documentary and portrait photographer August Sander (1876-1964), who is considered one of the most important German photographers of the 20th Century. This photograph, titled Young Farmers originally dates to 1914 and depicts three young men wearing suits, top hats, and holding canes standing in a field. The photograph is housed in a black painted wooden frame under acrylic glass and no signatures or marks are visible.

This photograph is from the series August Sander, Menschen des 20. Jahrhunderts or ‘People of the 20th Century,’ which was an epic documentary photo project where Sander attempted to ‘inventory’ the people of Germany and depicted his subjects with portraits that aligned with how they self-identified. Sanders embarked on this project knowing that the diverse people of a country could not be inventoried, rather the project was a response to the rise of fascist nationalism in his country. Sanders was forced to put the project on hold during the Nazi’s reign of power in the 1930s and 1940s, and lost much of his work when his studio was destroyed in a bombing in 1944.
