1961 Bradshaw Crandell Oil Painting

A 1961 oil painting on canvas of a portrait by listed artist Bradshaw Crandell (1896 – 1966). This well-rendered painting depicts a slightly elderly woman posed in a lace, crimson gown, with short hair curled to the edges. She stares towards the viewer with an inviting grin, illuminated against a brown background. To the lower left corner is a dated artist signature. The painting is presented in a stained and gold tone wooden frame featuring a linen liner and hanging wire to the verso.

Bradshaw Crandell is known for risque or ‘glamour’ illustrations of women. He received his formal educational from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago and the Wesleyan University. Crandell did a number number of covers for Cosmopolitan magazine and created works for Gerlach-Barklow Co., an art calendar factory in Illinois. Later in life he started to create oil painting on canvas for various topics including political figures. During 2006 inducted into the Society of Illustrators hall of fame.

Condition

- scratches and edge wear to frame; linen covered inner frame shows some discoloration to the corners and a puncture with loose threads to the bottom center right margin.
