Paul Chidlaw Abstract Expressionist Oil Painting on Academy Board
Item Details
An original oil painting on academy board by well-listed American Abstract Expressionist Paul Chidlaw (Cincinnati, 1900 – 1989). The abstract composition features loosely applied textural layers of color in bright hues that are accented with gestural lines in dark red and black. The work is unsigned, but comes from the artist’s estate. It is housed in a stained wood slat style frame and is ready to hang with a wire.
Chidlaw was born in Cleves, Ohio and studied at both the Cincinnati Art Academy and L’Ecole des Beaux Arts in Fontainebleau, France. He returned to Cincinnati where he then taught at the Art Academy mentoring many students. He was considered a pioneer of the Abstract movement, at the time, and he remains one of Cincinnati’s best-loved native artists. His artwork is displayed at the Cincinnati Art Museum and Xavier University.
