Paul Chidlaw Oil Painting on Academy Board "Phantasy by the Sea"

An original oil painting on academy board titled Phantasy by the Sea by well-listed American Abstract Expressionist Paul Chidlaw (Cincinnati, 1900 – 1989). The abstract painting features horizontal bands of blue and brown hues, with shorter strokes of pale purple hues scattered across the composition. The work is unsigned, but comes directly from the estate of the artist. The title and the inventory number #89-014 are written to the verso. It is presented in a gold tone coated wood frame, and is ready to display with a metal tab hanger or an easel back.

Chidlaw was born in Cleves, Ohio and studied at both the Cincinnati Art Academy and L’Ecole des Beaux Arts in Fontainebleau, France. He returned to Cincinnati where he then taught at the Art Academy mentoring many students. He was considered a pioneer of the Abstract movement, at the time, and he remains one of Cincinnati’s best-loved native artists. His artwork is displayed at the Cincinnati Art Museum and Xavier University.
