An antique Martin Frères rosewood flute in frame, circa 1840-1885. The piece features rosewood construction to the body with oxidized silver tone metal hardware and keys. The Martin Frères Société, or in English, the Martin Brothers Company, was established by brothers Jean-Baptiste, Claude Eugene, and Felix in 1840 in La Couture Boussey, France. They established a reputation for the construction of fine clarinets, but also manufactured a small number of high quality flutes. The piece is emboss marked with the ‘bee’ maker’s mark used by Martin Frères when it was established in 1840 until the company’s operation was taken over by the Thibouville family in the 1890s. It is presented under museum quality glass, float mounted in a shadow-box style mahogany frame lined in black velvet. It is ready to hang with a wire to the verso and includes a framer’s label to the verso.

Condition

- a minor chip noted in the frame to the top left; some dust to the flute and oxidation to metal noted; untested.
