A graphite drawing on paper of a nude figure by Raphael Soyer (Russian/American; 1899 -1987, dated 1959). Depicted is a nude female figure in a seated pose with her head tilted to the left. The artist’s signature is present to the lower left corner of the piece with the words ‘sketch’ to the lower right. This piece is presented as loose work without matting or a frame.
Born in Russia, Raphael Soyer emigrated to the United States with his family in 1912. He is recognized as a Social Realist artist, known for his paintings of contemporary men and women in everyday settings. He received art training at Cooper Union, the National Academy of Design, and the Art Students League of New York where he became associated with other renowned artists of his time. His work has been collected and exhibited by numerous art institutions including the Museum of Modern Art, the Corcoran Gallery of Art, and the Whitney Museum of American Art where a retrospective of his work was held in 1967.
