Item Details
Lloyd Hovland ‘The White Captive’ from the Western Scene series of American Wildlife artist Lloyd Hovland. The print is taken from the true story of the Gatlin Family, being captured by the Comanches. It is told that Gatlins hands were tied behind him, his boots and socks were removed and a rope was put around his neck. One of the Comanches then took his flint rifle and mounted his horse. Whenever the tied Gatlin fell or stumbled, the rope around his neck was yanked and he was clubbed with a tomahawk from behind until he got to his feet once again. This was the fate of Gatlin for 22 miles over very rough terrain in a severe and cold blizzard travel.
The print is has a ‘Sample’ stamp to the top, with artist name stamped to lower right corner.
A wonderful rustic frame in a twig motif captures the western feel beautifully!
