Sarah A. James Antique Needlepoint Sampler
Item Details
An antique needlepoint sampler made by Sarah A. James and dated ‘Nov 16 1863.’ This carefully-rendered needlework features a pair of wreaths encircling the names of James’ grandparents, with cross-stitched text reading ‘Joan Davies Aged 55 Years’ and ‘D.T.O. Davies Aged 62 Years.’ There is an inscription toward the upper edge reading ‘Presented by their grandaughter,’ with the date and artist’s name opposite it to the lower edge. The work is mounted in a gold tone frame without hardware for hanging.
Condition
- poor; stains and heavy discoloration throughout ground; some gaps in backing boards visible to front; chipping throughout frame; discoloration to finish of frame; abrasions and wear throughout frame.
