Vintage General Douglas MacArthur Pinback
Item Details
A vintage General Douglas MacArthur (1880-1964) pinback. The piece features the profile of the five-star U.S. army general and his name in red below. After his controversial firing by President Harry Truman, General Douglas MacArthur was held up as a hero by many who opposed the President and there was briefly a grassroots movement to draft him to run for President against Truman in 1948, this button being a memento of that effort. MacArthur served as the Chief of Staff of the United States Army in the 1930s and served in the army during the Mexican Revolution, World War I, World War II, and the Korean War. He was recalled to active duty in 1941 to command the United States Army in the Far East; and accepted Japan’s surrender aboard the USS Missouri on September 2, 1945.
