Antique Martha Washington Ladies of the Grand Army of the Republic Ribbon

Item Details

An antique Ladies of the Grand Army of the Republic Martha Washington medal from the late 19th century. This piece consists of a detached gold-toned headpiece with a red, white, and blue bar and a main pendant depicting the face of Martha Washington in a white bonnet. The red, white, and blue striped ribbon reads ‘Martha Washington Circle, no. 5, L. of the G.A.R., Lynn, Mass.’ and the back of the badge is etched with ‘Whitehead & Hoag Co. Badges, pat. June 12 94, Newark N.J.’

Long after her death in 1802, the first First Lady Martha Washington was held up as an example of early American womanhood, her image used to evoke loyalty, strength and simplicity. Her image was particularly revived in the 1890s as a patriotic figure during the centennial of her husband’s presidency
