A colorful and unusual handwoven Tunisian Gafsa pictorial wool kilim. This charming flatweave area rug is rendered in a vibrant palette of crimson, ivory, saffron, cobalt, fuchsia, clementine, mint, wine, and olive. It is woven in such a way that is is the same on front and back; a difficult weave style. The field features all-over square panels framed in crimson, and shows geometrically shaped and stylized motifs and patterns including combs, camels, sawtooth patterns, animals, humans, diamonds, and stripes. Finishing this rug are double overcast selvedges and an ivory wool warp fringe. It retains the original wax seal to the underside, required at the time in order for this type of kilim to be legally exported.
