Paul Chidlaw Original Charcoal on Canvas Drawing "Impromptu Landscape"
Item Details
Charcoal on paper
A 1987 charcoal drawing on prepared canvas titled Impromptu Landscape by well-listed American Abstract Expressionist Paul Chidlaw (Cincinnati, 1900 – 1989). The drawing features loose, gestural charcoal marks that suggest rolling hills with tree tops and buildings scattered throughout. The entire composition is floating, unanchored, in a sea of white space. The work is signed in charcoal to the lower left. It is housed in a silver-tone wood frame and is equipped to hang with a wire. A label indicating the artist’s name, the title and the date is attached to the verso.
Chidlaw was born in Cleves, Ohio and studied at both the Cincinnati Art Academy and L’Ecole des Beaux Arts in Fontainebleau, France. He returned to Cincinnati where he then taught at the Art Academy mentoring many students. He was considered a pioneer of the Abstract movement, at the time, and he remains one of Cincinnati’s best-loved native artists. His artwork is displayed at the Cincinnati Art Museum and Xavier University.
