A vintage charcoal on paper by Clyde Singer (American, 1908 – 1998). This piece depicts a seated woman wearing a short dress in monochrome on a tan ground. It is hand signed with the artist’s initials to the lower center and dated 1940. The work is presented under glass, matted and set in a silver tone wooden frame with hanging wire to verso.
Clyde Singer was born in 1908 and grew up in the rural hills of Ohio. He attended the school at the Columbus Gallery of Fine Arts and received a scholarship to the Arts Students’ League in New York City in 1933, where he was mentored by John Steuart Curry and Thomas Hart Benton. Singer’s work has been exhibited at the Whitney Museum, the Corcoran Gallery, the Chicago Art Institute, the National Academy of Design, the Massillon Museum, the Canton Museum of Art, and the Butler Institute of American Art.
