A pairing of an 1866 Frank Leslie’s Illustrated Newspaper and an 1868 Harper’s Weekly illustration. Featured is a July 7, 1866 edition of Frank Leslie’s Illustrated Newspaper presenting profiles of prominent public men recently deceased, including Moses F. Odell, Hon. James Humphrey, Hon. Lewis Cass and ‘The President’s Office and Library’ indicating a loss that it was no longer open to the public. A lithographic illustration dated April 4, 1868 from Harper’s Weekly depicting the ‘Lobby Of The White House At Washington’ sketched by Theodore R. Davis completes the pairing. Both papers are presented in plastic sleeves. These are the first public illustrations of the private rooms at the White House and are depicted under the impeached President Andrew Johnson.
