Late-19th Century "Fancy Sketch"
Item Details
Pastel on paper
A late-19th century landscape drawing, labeled as a Fancy Sketch to its verso. This work is rendered with what seems to be a mica-based chalk pastel, and depicts a large glassy lake under the watch of bright, round moon, with a castle toward the nearest shoreline and a village along the opposite. Patches of dark clouds are present along the upper edge of the composition, which has details rendered via careful blending as well as incised linework. The drawing is mounted under glass in a gold tone wooden frame and has a notation reading ‘Fancy Sketch, (Original), Drawn Feb 12th 1817,’ to its verso along with initials appearing to read ‘F. V. E.’ The frame includes a wire for hanging.
