Paul Chidlaw Original Oil Painting on Board "Awakwening"
Item Details
An original oil painting on board titled Awakening by well-listed American artist Paul Chidlaw (1900-1989). The abstract painting features broad expressive strokes of color in vibrant hues, layered one over the other to create a rhythmic background. A series of gestural arcs, rendered in textural strokes of blue and brown, create a pattern through the center of the composition. The work is signed in white to the lower right and the title is written to the verso. It is mounted to a stained board and housed in a stained wood frame with silver-tone metal trim, and is ready to hang with a wire.
A Chidlaw was born in Cleves, Ohio, and studied at both the Cincinnati Art Academy and L’Ecole des Beaux Arts in Fontainebleau, France. He returned to Cincinnati where he then taught at the Art Academy mentoring many students. He was considered a pioneer of the Abstract movement, at the time, and he remains one of Cincinnati’s best-loved native artists. His artwork is displayed in the Cincinnati Art Museum and Xavier University.
