Paul Chidlaw Original Oil Portrait Painting on Masonite

An original oil portrait painting on masonite by well listed American artist Paul Chidlaw (1900-1989). This painting depicts the head of a male figure Expressively painting with non-associative color and a heavy application of pigment. The figure appears to be adorned with a crown of laurel leaves and wears an animated expression on his face. This painting is unsigned. However, the verso is marked with a stamp from the artist’s estate and it was known to hang in the artist’s studio at one time and later in his residence. This piece is framed in a gold-tone frame with a linen liner. The verso of this piece is equipped to hang and includes a short document with information about the work.
Chidlaw was born in Cleves, Ohio, and studied at both the Cincinnati Art Academy and L’Ecole des Beaux Arts in Fontainebleau, France. He returned to Cincinnati where he then taught at the Art Academy mentoring many students. He was considered a pioneer of the Abstract movement, at the time, and he remains one of Cincinnati’s best-loved native artists. His artwork is displayed in the Cincinnati Art Museum and Xavier University.
