Michigan born Pop artist Robert Dowd is best known for his paintings of U.S. currency and postage stamps. Dowd began drawing common everyday objects such as stop signs at a young age. By 1962 his work was featured alongside artists such as Roy Lichtenstein, Andy Warhol, Jim Dine, Joe Goode, and other prominent contemporary artists at the New Painting of Common Objects exhibition at the Pasadena Art Museum, historically considered the first Pop Art exhibition in America. After moving to New York City in 1970, Dowd did commission work, painting Windows With a View on windowless offices, and Unexpected Universe for Cornell University, where he also showed a solo exhibition at the White Museum in 1972.
