An oil painting on canvas titled Leona by well-listed American artist Edgar Yaeger (1904-1997), created in 1982. This work features a middle-aged woman seated in a modern ovoid chair with orange and green drapery hanging along the wall behind her. The work is portrayed with dark outlines and loose expressionistic brushstrokes exhibiting smeared pigments and suppressed detail throughout the modern style composition. It is signed and dated to the lower left and presented in a gray wood frame with a purple liner. A descriptive label is present to the verso.
Known for his modern abstract style and his WPA murals of the Depression era, Edgar Yaeger was influenced by European modernists such as Paul Cézanne, Pablo Picasso, and Giorgio de Chirico. Yaeger’s work has been exhibited at many institutions including the Museum of Modern Art, the Detroit Institute of Art, the Corcoran Gallery, the Art Institute of Chicago, and the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts, among others.
