Item Details
A vintage signed embroidered tapestry titled Casas Portuguesas No.3. The tapestry depicts a Cubist-style rendering of buildings and streets in Portugal. Worked in wool in shades of camel, ocher, olive, white, toast, coffee, crimson, and sky blue, the depiction reflects both the density of the towns and the bright sunshine associated with the climate. The piece is signed ‘Maia/SS’ in the lower right corner and is bound at the edges on the back with strips of canvas. A cloth tag written on in ink states ‘Galeria Sesimbra/Rua Castilho 77/6/1000 Lisboa Portugal/Artist: Abel Maia/Title: Casas Portuguesas/No.3’.
