A ceramic beer stein featuring the Chasseurs à Cheval. The Chasseurs à Cheval (literally ‘Mounted Hunters’) were an elite unit of horsemen created by Napoleon Bonaparte who suffered a serious defeat by the Prussians at the Battle of Sedan in 1870. This vessel includes a pewter lid, molded with military insignia and topped with a finial molded in the likeness of a mounted cavalry officer with an eagle thumb lift. The stein is printed with a scene from the Battle of Sedan, inscribed ‘Ungriff Französische Chasseurs à Cheval bei Sedan’ (German for ‘Dislodging of the French Chasseurs à Cheval at Sedan’) near the base. The piece is finished with laurel bands and red trim. It is marked with a label to the inner lid: ’Dupree’s, New Orleans.’
