Bill Schiffer Charcoal Sketches

Item Details

Charcoal on paper

A selection of charcoal sketches of symbols by contemporary New York artist Bill Schiffer. These five drawings, some of which are on transparent tracing paper, depict various iconography including repeated hammer and sickles, as well as the number five and non-distinctive, swirled shapes. To the margins are numerical inscriptions and handwritten signatures.

Born in New York, Bill Schiffer rose to prominence as a painter and sculptor in the early 1980’s. Though he still works in many two dimensional and three dimensional art mediums, Schiffer is most well known for his unique handcrafted jewelry, which he started designing after a foray experimenting with wearable art in the fashion scene. Bill Schiffer’s art and jewelry has been shown in the Victoria and Albert Museum in London, the Musee des Arts Decoratifs in Paris, as well as major museums in Italy, Japan, Germany and the United States. His work has been featured in publications including Vogue, Elle, Bazaar, Women’s Wear Daily, Seventeen and Cosmopolitan.
