World War II Japanese Good Luck Flag
Item Details
A World War II era Japanese Good Luck Flag. As Japanese servicemen headed off to war, their families and townspeople would often create a yosegaki hinomaru (寄せ書き日の丸) flag with their names and well-wishes for their time away. This piece consists of one such ‘Good Luck Flag’, with the large top line reading ‘A prayer for continued luck in fortunes of war’ (祈武運長久), a vertical inscription signifying that the flag has been ‘bestowed to Mr. Sekigawa Kyoji for good luck’ (贈関川清吉君), and many smaller phrases and names written on the flag to all sides.
