Umberto Romano Lithograph "Gypsy's Guitar"

A signed lithograph on paper titled Gypsy’s Guitar by well-listed American artist Umberto Romano (1905 – 1984). This print depicts a man with sharp facial features, his clothes hanging in tatters as he strums a guitar that he holds close to his body. The print is signed in-plate and by hand in graphite to the lower right corner. It is matted in off-white and presented in a black wooden frame with a metal hanging wire to the verso. Adhered to the verso is a newspaper clipping with information on the artist and a label from Associated American Artists.

Born in Italy, Umberto Romano emigrated to the United States with his parents as a child. He studied at the National Academy of Design and abroad on a Pulitzer Traveling Scholarship. He was associated with several renowned American artists such as Stuart Davis, Marsden Hartley, and Milton Avery, among others. Among his notable compositions are murals he created for the WPA and the official portrait of President Franklin Roosevelt’s mother, Sara. His work has been represented by numerous institutions including the Whitney Museum of American Art, the Smithsonian Institution, and the Art Institute of Chicago, among others.
