Bill Schiffer Mixed Media Works on Paper

Item Details

Other

A pair of mixed media works on paper by New York artist Bill Schiffer (Contemporary). The first of these is a charcoal and oil marker portrait of former president Lyndon B. Johnson surrounded by billowing American flags that is signed ‘William Schiffer’ and dated 1969 to the lower right. The second piece is unsigned and depicts an American flag in charcoal and graphite with the words ‘Washington never told a lie’ written in the stripes. The works are presented unmatted and unframed.

Born in New York, Bill Schiffer rose to prominence as a painter and sculptor in the early 1980s. Though he still works in many two dimensional and three dimensional art mediums, Schiffer is most well known for his unique handcrafted jewelry, which he started designing after a foray experimenting with wearable art in the fashion scene. Bill Schiffer’s art and jewelry has been shown in the Victoria and Albert Museum in London, the Musee des Arts Decoratifs in Paris, as well as major museums in Italy, Japan, Germany and the United States. His work has been featured in publications including Vogue, Elle, Bazaar, Women’s Wear Daily, Seventeen and Cosmopolitan.
