Antique Naval Embroidery Featuring an American Eagle and Flag
Item Details
An antique, circa 1900, Asian trapunto embroidery on silk. The detailed work, typically created for American sailors traveling to foreign ports, depicts an eagle, with spread wings and a glass eye, carrying an American flag in its talons. A series of flags emanate from a patriotic shield and surround a central image that is framed by an oval of gold tone metallic tread embroidery. Within that frame several figures peer out at the sea from a covert vantage point as one raises his arm to seemingly gain attention. A banner, inscribed with the words ‘The development of ’Old Glory’’ is embroidered below the flag. The work is housed behind glass, in a black and gold tone wood frame with a hanging wire to the verso.
