A bronze sculpture by Florence Sprague Smith (Iowa 1888-1971), signed and dated 1914. The bronze sculpture depicts a woman delighted to carry a large basket and aptly titled Joy of Laborto the front edge.

Florence Sprague Smith taught at the Institute of Chicago then accepted a position as instructor of art at Drake University, Des Moines in 1920. She was also a member of the Stone City Art Colony established with funding by the Carnegie Foundation in 1932 however the colony was never self sustaining and was dissolved in 1933. Florence married Jefferson Smith and moved to Los Angeles where she continued painting and sculpting until her death in 1971. Interestingly, her father in law was the legendary Jefferson Randolph ‘Soapy’ Smith, a notorious con artist in the saloons of Colorado and Alaska during the 1890s.
