An oil painting on canvas panel by listed artist Gustav Wolff (German-American, 1863 – 1935). The work depicts a quiet rural scene in rich greens. Signed by the artist to the lower right corner. Housed in a wood frame with a biographic label to the verso.
Wolff was known for his impressionistic landscapes and street scenes. Born in Germany, the artist emigrated to the United States with his family as a young child. It was in Saint Louis, Missouri that the artist received his formal training. Wolff belonged to the late 19th-century Saint Louis landscape school, which emphasized harmonious mood over geographic accuracy. Today, Wolff’s work can be found in numerous private collections and the City Art Museum in Saint Louis.
