In the Kingdom of Tuoni from series Kalevala Theme
Oil Painting on Canvas
Signed to Lower Left; Inscribed to Verso
10.25’ W x 9’ H

An oil painting on canvas wrapped on board by listed Canadian-American artist Ida Barbour Carmichael (1884-1981), titled In the Kingdom of Tuoni. From the artist’s series Kalevala Theme, this abstract work features a receding blue plane delineated with black orthogonals and intersecting lines, leading to a fiery brown, orange, and yellow formation on the horizon line with the glowing sun hovering above. Signed to the lower left, the painting is presented in an off-white painted wood frame. Handwritten inscriptions present to the verso provide the theme, title, and a quote from Rune XVI reading ‘Evil witch and toothless wizard / spinner of the threads of iron.’

Based in Cincinnati, Ohio, Ida Carmichael was known for her abstract modernist oil paintings that often feature starkly outlined shapes and flat planes of vibrant colors. She studied at the Cincinnati Art Academy with Reginald Grooms, Clement Barnhorn and Herman Wessel. She was a member of many art organizations in Cincinnati and the rest of the country. Her work has been exhibited at the Cincinnati Art Museum, Closson’s Galleries, and Loring Andrews Galleries, among other art venues.
