An antique Italian Renaissance Revival walnut hall chair, circa 1890. The ornately carved chair features a bowed and carved crest rail supported by a North Wind mask carved and acanthus pierced splat flanked by horned and winged androgynous caryatids carved in the round. The armrests slope downward from the figures and terminate in lion head handholds, connected to the seat by ‘C’ scroll supports. The shaped seat, which features an incised medallion and carved shell trim, rests on flat legs shaped as seated Sphinx figures connected by shaped stretchers with carved North Wind masks. There are no visible maker’s marks.
