1980 Planographic Poster for "As We Saw Them" Exhibit at Rutgers University

A vintage halftone poster on paper for a December 1980 exhibit at Rutgers University titled As We Saw Them: Westerners Interpret Japan, 1853 – 1912. The print depicts a 19th-century portrait of Commodore Matthew C. Perry (1794 – 1858) with Japanese text printed in plate to the top. The piece includes facsimile signatures of Japanese dignitaries Sanjō Sanetomi and Sakuma Shōzan printed in plate to the lower margin. It is presented under glass in a silver tone wooden frame with red liner. The frame verso includes a hanging wire, as well as a schedule of events for the 1980 exhibit.

Condition

- warping to ground; accretion and debris present under glass, including small dead spider to lower right; toning, foxing and discoloration to print, with moisture stains to lower margin; edge wear, paint marks and scuffing to frame; glass could be cleaned more thoroughly; torn paper backing, with wear to documents adhered to verso.
