Dorothy Dunitz Stoneware and Porcelain Plates

Item Details

A pair of handbuilt stoneware and porcelain plates by Michigan artist Dorothy Dunitz. The first is a buff colored stoneware clay body with abstract application of speckled grey and opaque white glazes, with a stripe of taupe glaze to the surface; a tag to the underside appears to be a note for marking the type of glaze or mix used. A hanger has been built into the back for hanging display. The second is a freeform porcelain slab with ‘torn’ edges, having an applied drip glaze in pale green-grey in an abstract pattern. Both works are signed to the underside.

Dorothy Dunitz (American, 1919-2016) was a well known Franklin, Michigan ceramicist, known for her abstract plate and plaque forms in porcelain, typically using a variety of textures and muted, earth toned glazes. Several of her pieces are held by the Detroit Institute of Art.
