A hand-colored engraving with mezzotint on paper by British artist George Maile (c.1800-1842) after a painting by an artist ‘Dubuse’. The piece is titled La Réponse, or The Answer, and depicts a 19th century woman seated with a quill in hand and contemplating a letter that she is writing. It has the title and artists’ named printed to the lower margin and is presented behind a mat and glass in a gold tone wood frame with saw-tooth brackets to the verso for hanging.

Condition

- accretion to glass; worn frame finish; tape to the center right of glass.
