A twenty-four volume set of the ninth edition of Encycloædia Britannica. This ninth edition, published by Adam and Charles Black in Edinburgh between 1875 and 1889, is often referred to as the ’Scholar’s Edition’. It includes the first entry for ‘Evolution’ in the Encyclopædia Britannica, as well as the first notable entry on women. Included are twenty-four volumes of twenty-five, excluding the Index volume. Each volume is bound in three-quarters leather with blue cloth boards. Gilt ornamentation, lettering, and raised bands grace the spines of each volume, with marbled endpapers to the interior.
