Item Details
A vintage French tall-case clock by Coutand. This unique clock features a pillar style wooden case with a molded plinth base, that features a carved and pierced gallery, along with a central floral medallion while rising on four ball feet. The clock also features four fluted columns supporting the clock face and mechanism, and houses an ornately detailed brass pendulum with ivory and turquoise coloring, as well as scrolling foliate, floral, and beaded accents. The open case also houses a pair of ropes for the pulleys that lead to a pair of holes into the plinth base. The clock face is housed in a coordinating wooden case flanked by large leaf carvings, topped with a molded crown, and housed behind a hinged door. A brass plate supports the clock face which is set in a beaded brass bezel, and displays black Roman numerals, a chapter ring, and an inner dial with Arabic number as well. The face has ornate brass hands, with a spade and crescent tipped second hand, along with two key arbors, and marked ‘Coutand’, ‘a La Chataigneraie’; Chataigneraie is a region in Western France. There is a door to one side of the clock, and the verso goes unmarked.
