Item Details
A gouache painting on paper titled Fire Island by listed Scottish artist William Stewart MacGeorge (1861-1931). This piece depicts a calm, reflective body of water lined with trees and grassy marshes visible in the distance. It is titled to the lower left, and signed to the lower right. It is presented behind a mat and glass in a gold tone wood frame with wire to the verso for hanging. The artist’s name is also handwritten to the verso.
Celebrated as one of the leading members of the Kirkcudbright School of Artists, William Stewart MacGeorge studied at Antwerp’s Academie Royale des Beaux Arts under Charles Verlat (1824-1890), and the Royal Scottish Academy where he regularly exhibited his work. He is especially known for his figural landscapes often featuring fishermen and children at play. His work has been exhibited at numerous prestigious institutions including the Paris Salon, the National Gallery of Scotland, and the Gracefield Arts Centre in Edinburgh, among others.
