A lithograph on paper titled …To Days in Rooms Withdrawn and Quiet which is Plate XIII from For the Sake of a Single Verse… from ‘the Notebooks of Malte Laurids Brigge’ by Rainer Maria Rilke by graphic artist, painter, and educator Ben Shahn (1898 – 1969). The work depicts a stylized portrait on fields of grey and blue. To the bottom right, the work is signed in plate. The print is presented in a customized paper folder with the plate number printed to the front and the title of the work printed to the inside.
Ben Shahn was born in Lithuania in 1989 and came to the United States with his family in 1906 where he began his art training as an apprentice printmaker. He formally took classes at New York University, City College of New York, and the National Academy of Design. Using a variety of mediums including painting and photography Shahn used his work to critique society and eventually created more personal works that explored symbolism. Shahn’s work can be viewed in both public and private collections including the Art Institute of Chicago, the Museum of Modern Art, and the Smithsonian American Art Museum.
