Chaim Gross 1969 Etching on Paper

Item Details

An etching on paper of an avian scene by well-listed artist Chaim Gross (Austrian-American, 1904 – 1991), dated 1969. The work depicts a large bird surrounded by a flock of smaller, similar birds. Dated and signed by the artist in plate to the lower center and lower right. Housed in a gilt wood frame under acrylic glass and white matting.

Gross was well-known for his acrobatic figural sculptures. Disrupted by WWI, the artist received his formal education in art from several sources. This included six months at an art academy in Budapest, a year in drawing at the Kunstgewerbeschule in Vienna, five years of night courses at the Educational Alliance Art School in Manhattan, and the Beaux-Arts Institute of Design in New York City. In his emigration to New York City and education, the artist became acquainted with painters Raphael Soyer (Russian-American, 1899 – 1987) and Abbo Ostrowsky (Russian-American, 1889 – 1975). Towards the 1950s, the artist firmly rooted his style in figural sculpture, in wood, bronze, and plaster; often with interlocking and kinetic elements. The artist exhibited throughout several prestigious New York museums including the Museum of Modern Art and the Whitney Museum of American Art. Today, his works can be found in both private and public collections, including the Brooklyn Museum and the Smithsonian American Art Museum.
